Students, faculty win at physics conference

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College physics students and a faculty member earned awards at the recent Sigma Pi Sigma Quadrennial Congress held in Orlando Nov. 8-10, 2012.

Sigma Pi Sigma is a national physics honor society with chapters at colleges and universities across the country. Thirty-three Grove City College physics students and three of their faculty members attended the conference.

Earning recognition in the “Physics and Society” category of the student poster awards were first place winner junior Allen Scheie (Cincinnati) and second place winner senior Matthew Goszewski (Depew, N.Y.). Both presented on their summer internships through the Society of Physics Students. Scheie was a Mather policy intern working in science policy and Goszewski was an APS Physics Quest intern developing demonstrations for use by middle school science teachers.

In the art contest, Professor of Physics Dr. Glenn Marsch won the grand prize in the “Physics for Everyone” category for his photograph of ice crystals called “Pirouette.” He also earned an honorable mention for his photograph titled “Into the Heart of a Supercell.” Sophomore Lauren Dallachiesa (Nuremburg, Pa.) won first place in the “General Science” category for her colored pencil drawing, “Water Droplet on a Blade of Grass.”
