Calaboyias exhibits at Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The work of renowned artist and educator Peter Calaboyias, a professor of art at Grove City College, will be on display from Jan. 21 through March 21 at Pittsburgh’s Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild.

Calaboyias’ “Northside and Beyond” show features paintings, sculptures and other pieces from the earliest days of the internationally recognized artist’s career to recent work, some of which has never been exhibited.

Though he was born in Icaria, Greece, Calaboyias has a strong connection to Pittsburgh’s North Side. His first teaching job after graduating from Pennsylvania State University in 1962 was at Conroy Junior High School in the Manchester neighborhood. In 1966, he joined the faculty of Community College of Allegheny County, also on the North Side, and taught there until 1995 when he joined the faculty at Grove City College.

“In the search of where to have this current exhibit, it was the realization that the exhibit be on the North Side. Many of the drawings, prints, paintings and sculptures span those years … There are early works of North Side images and some recent works painted in Greece,” Calaboyias says. “This exhibit provides a view of a life lived in Pittsburgh and a slice of my ethnic heritage.”

His paintings and sculptures have been exhibited worldwide. His sculptures grace the grounds of several Pennsylvania colleges, including Penn State, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Geneva College and, most recently, Grove City College, where his cast-iron sculpture “Pythagorean Pi” was installed last year. “Tribute,” a sculpture he was commissioned to create for the 1996 Olympics, stands in Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park. His best known works locally include “Silver Grid Wall” at the Pittsburgh International Airport and “Five Factors” in the city’s Mellon Park.

A reception and artist talk is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, 1815 Metropolitan Street, Pittsburgh. For details, call 412-322-1773 or visit the guild’s website: http://mcgyouthandarts.org/
