What is Family Weekend? Family Weekend, which grew out of the College’s original “May Day” celebration, gives us an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of our students and provide an opportunity for families to visit during a event-filled weekend on campus. The tradition of May Day was established at Grove City College as an annual event in 1916. The first ceremony was highlighted by the crowning of the May Queen and was later supplemented by a pageant of dances in the Queen’s honor. In the late 1950s, the day’s activities were expanded to include a Recognition Convocation (to highlight students’ academic and leadership achievements) and a Greek Sing (to provide a friendly musical competition for student groups). Each year, the celebration has evolved to be more extensive to include theater, musical, athletic and Today, Family Weekend is a time to celebrate the cumulative academic, service, musical, athletic and social achievements of students throughout the academic school year and a time to honor you, the parents and families who support and encourage your students along the way. We hope you’ll join us for this annual tradition. View the Full Weekend Schedule.

Why does Family Weekend fall just two weeks before graduation in May? Family Weekend grew out of the College’s original May Day celebration which is why it takes place in May. We hold the weekend toward the end of the spring semester in order to celebrate the cumulative achievements of students throughout the academic year. There are many events throughout the Spring but Family Weekend plays host to many special events.
Is there another time during the academic year when parents and families can visit campus? We do recognize that May is a busy time for both students and their families. It is for this reason that we’ve added events and opportunities for parents over Homecoming Weekend each fall. If for some reason you can’t attend Family Weekend in the spring, we hope you’ll mark your calendar to visit your student on campus during the fall semester.
Have future Family Weekend dates already been set? Family Weekend 2017 will be held May 5-7, in 2018 it will be held on May 4-6.
Where can I review a full Academic Calendar (final exams, breaks included)? Review Academic Calendar here.
